Sometimes you hear a song and it just sticks to your ribs… it keeps you pressing rewind because it just hits you in a certain kinda way. Or maybe it throws a crazy combo from the beat, to the lyrics, to the flow, to the sample, to the chorus, to the message, to the passion, to the cadence, to…. you get it… when a track can check a ton of boxes it forever will be stained in my mind… I first heard Ab-Soul’s track “Do Better” back in October of 2022… I knew from the first 30 seconds that it would be one of my favorite rap tracks from the 2020’s. It might just be on my favorite rap tracks of all time list though. It is truly a masterpiece.

This is my new playlist all about 90's california rap compilations. Back in the good ole days, artists would come together on independent compilations that brought tons of great people together. I love this sense of community in hip hop and I think compilations and soundtracks were the best way for likeminded hustlers to try to go hit a lick... this is a playlist of songs from some of your favorite artists that you possibly never heard.... do you accept this challenge?

a$ap rocky is on my mount rushmore. his album drops are celebrations... he's never trapped in four walls with his styles. he's got riri on his arm and a couple of kids who stay out of the public being raised as normal as possible. he burst onto the scene in 2011 with "peso" and "purple swag" and he hasn't left the public spotlight since. he can spit with the best on tracks like "1train" but then drop "fashion killa" and start new waves that others can't surf.... that's iconic... rakim aka rocky is a goat.

KENDRICK COLE DRAKE - BEEF?
What is rap beef in 2024? To me it’s non-existent in the way that us kids in the 90’s know it. But as somebody who stays up on rap, hip hop beef in 2024 means you better step your bars up. And you better have a content creation team that will support your every move. Kendrick, Cole, and Drake have all of this. They’re ready to flex. They’re ready to rap. Grab your popcorn….

Not sure if there’s a producer that brings a better vibe to a track than Budgie. He’s worked with Kanye and Drake but hangs in the under with cats like Earl Sweatshirt, Evidence, Jay Worthy, Navy Blue, and more. While the features are nice, those beats man….. Budgee is that guy on the boards.

Damn… This year marks the 20th anniversary of Kanye West’s debut album, College Dropout. Has it really been that long? It seems like yesterday we became more open minded to pink polos and rockin’ backpacks outside of school hours. Kanye is obviously a very polarizing figure and feel however you want to feel about him, he has some classics under his belt. College Dropout being one of them. So to pay homage to Ye, I wanted to go back in time to the early 2000’s and paint a picture to the lead up to his debut release while highlighting some of the unreleased tracks from that era that you might not have heard.

Last week marked the 50th anniversary of hip hop and unless you live under a rock, you’ve been hit with content from every angle about the big day. For me, it’s been cool to see the genre of rap and hip hop being recognized and embraced globally. Hip Hop is the most popular music genre in the world now but it wasn’t always so widely accepted.

The late 90’s in San Diego saw hip hop and skate and it was a beautiful thing to see. Going to rap shows back then was a straight up vibe with the baggy clothes all of us were wearing, the breakdancing in the club, the ciphers outside, and the beedie and herb smoke permeating the air as DJ’s played nothing but fire 90’s underground hip hop. Here’s a Spotify playlists and a few tracks for you to take you back to the good ole days….

Most of the hip hop I listen to wouldn’t hit your ear drums like it hits mine. I don’t like a lot of the mainstream hits bubbling on social media channels. I stay listening to music which can’t be fit into a box. I like rappers who take chances and producers who aren’t afraid to step outside the lines on their beats. Rap has so many different genres now that it’s hard to keep up with what’s dope unless you got your ears to the ground. Well I do… I stay looking for that next shit and this is my playlist to bring you in on what I’m bumpin over here. This is ALTERNATIVE HIP HOP for y’all.
