On October 23rd, 1993 I was in the 8th grade and was 13 years old with nothing but rap music on my mind. Once school ended that afternoon, I grabbed my backpack and walked down and up a huge hill so I could get to the UTC mall in San Diego. Too $hort’s new album dropped that day and I needed to buy the cassette. I had a problem though. I was a tiny white kid and that parental advisory sticker on the album meant I wasn’t old enough to buy it. So I proceeded to hustle to get that tape. I stood outside Wherehouse Music and asked everybody over the age of 18 to buy that tape for me. I had money in hand and asked EVERYBODY. I didn’t care who you were because I needed my drug. I needed Too $hort’s new album, Get In Where You Fit In. I finally found somebody to buy it for me and the rest is history. That tape went right into my walkman and that intro was so dope!
Man that intro was dope but then song #2 came on and the game was over. “I’m a Player” is one of the best rap songs of all time. Some great player type raps over a funky beat from The Dangerous Crew. Here’s the edited video that you can watch with your kids! Actually no… Don’t let your kids listen to Too Short quite yet… Give them a few years!
