Let’s start with just the sample that Conductor Williams’ used on the track. Billy Cobham’s “Siesta / Wake Up / That’s What I Said” is the original sample. Skip right to 1:00 into the song and just slump in your chair… A work of art.
Conductor Williams sent the beat to Westside Gunn while Flygod was having writer’s block. Somebody told him to go on a drive to break his writer’s block and he drove from Atlanta to Dallas before heading to a hotel to knock out what we now know as “Michael Irvin” off of the Flygod is an Awesome God 2 album back in 2020. He said in the interview down below that it only took him to record the track in the makeshift studio he had set up at that hotel.
I didn’t know about the Tyler and DJ Khaled drama did you? Maybe I was sleeping but I can’t see the Khaled shade as anything but hating. Tyler brought that energy into his 2021 album, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST. DJ Drama hosting the album like his Mixtape Weezy days was executed perfectly. Tyler just dips into the beat and straight murders the track. I’m trying to think of other rappers who would carve up this beat like Flygod and Tyler. I could see Danny Brown spazzing on this. I could see Mach-Hommy just melt into the beat. I think Quelle Chris could approach it well too. Who else can you think of? Drop them in the comments and let me know.
