Homeboy Sandman has forever been an emcee that I hear a verse or a song from him and I just say, damn…. Yet I still haven’t gotten into his full discography because for some odd reason I feel like saving it in the stash for a rainy day. But hearing his new EP with Aesop Rock on the beats is too fresh to stray away from. I have an issue though. I’m stuck on the first song, “Go Hard.”
I think I’ve listened to this track 20 times already. His double-time flow is effortless and then when you dissect the bars you’re left nodding your head from the beat and from what he’s saying. This reminds me of some old Aesop Rock material from his album Float back in the day. Ace Rock has always had beats and flows for days so his collaboration with Homeboy Sandman is on point. Here’s an old song from Aesop Rock’s album Float. He killed the beat on “Big Bang” along with the verses and chorus.
Aesop Rock and Blockhead used to work closely on his early albums and I think Homeboy Sandman is beginning to see the chemistry he can have when locked in with one producer. I really enjoyed Homeboy Sandman’s album with Edan that dropped a few years ago. Maybe I slept on Edan but I feel like he hasn’t put out much material since his Beauty & The Beat album from 2005. To me that was the pinnacle of psychedelic rap. But then we got Edan and Homeboy Sandman on a Stones Throw album? That was innovative and dope! Here’s “The Gut” which is one of the dopest music videos I’ve ever seen.
The new EP (or is it an album?) Homeboy Sandman just dropped is called Anjelitu and it’s available on all of the DSP’s. Homeboy Sandman has been nice for a very long time with lyrical content that you can relate to. He doesn’t try hard to be a certain something… the dude just raps and raps and raps. Gives you the vibe that you could pull alongside of him and just shoot the shit about anything. Shout out to Mellow Music Group for releasing this project. There aren’t many record labels out there nowadays that you can consistently count on for dope music.
