Okay, I get it. You used to collect baseball cards but you’re not into it anymore. For real though… You have kids and a family and a job that really is a grind. You crush it at pivot tables and v-lookups at work but what gives you that drive? What motivates you? Well…. Financial freedom motivates me. And when I see an opportunity open up on the revenue side of things I am like a shark in blood infested water. I throw on the Alchemist beats in my headphones and I get to hustling. All I’m trying to do is grow my bottom like enough that I can comfortably get that iced out California chain by my boy Ben Baller. On the discount too because he knows I’m out here putting in work and will help him sell more cards. This is the greatest marketing opportunity of my lifetime. I can talk about rap and baseball cards at the same time. Yup…. I’m in my zone.
And then I might just get mom and dad really mad at me and get a Dwight Gooden tattoo on my forearm just to let them know the Doc is on the mound. I’ve always wanted a tattoo but they will not be feeling it one bit. They’ll be disappointed at first but I think they’ll come around. I’ll hide it from them with long sleeve t-shirts I guess and then sit at weird angles on the yellow couch. I’ll get the tattoo on a classic Cali vibe though. I’ll pay top dollar for a Mister Cartoon tattoo so I can have that Cali OG Nike Cortez type swagger out on the streets. Don’t trip… I’m from San Diego but I respect Los Angeles. A Mister Cartoon tattoo would be legit.
And then I gotta get some fresh new art for my our new 3 bedroom house I’m going to buy over in Clairemont close to my home KevBoneSlice. If we have 3 bedrooms in the house we buy you know what that extra room is going to be like right? I’m getting out all the Obey prints and I’m getting the Street Fighter 2 arcade game plugged in and last but not least, my sports artwork is going to be fire. Trust me… Always gotta pay homage to the greats in some way. The legends like Rickey Henderson who had swag like nobody ever in the sport. You favorite player has a cool bat flip but Rickey was popping his collar and strutting out that box on the bomb. And when he stole 3rd base headfirst he might just hold the bag over his head to remind you that he’s a boss. My boy Blake Jamieson knows the vibe I’m on. He’s on the same wave as me.
My site is called Mid90s so you know that I’m on the 90’s swag. It’s all about the colors used. The fluorescent pinks and the blues and yellows were fire back then. Yellow is really starting to pop as a color way and my guess is yellow or a golden mustard might take home the pantone of the year award this year. Oh you guys don’t follow pantone trends? You’re slippin! Browns are even sneaking in there…. Brown and Gold combo? Just look at the Efdot artwork below on his Tony Gwynn 1983 Topps rookie card flip. Do you see how wavey this is? The palm trees? The sand? This screams Timmy dragging that Morey Boogie Board through the sand to the waves. Maybe play a little Smashball to dry off? Beach day, all day.
All I’m saying is this. You’re hearing about Topps Project 2020 Baseball Cards and maybe you don’t want to invest but maybe you should just look at some cool artwork. Art does a lot for the soul you know? These artists are all expressing themselves through the baseball legends that we all look up to as idols. That’s really cool. I once came within 10 feet of Ken Griffey Jr. and it was amazing. He was on the team bus in Spring Training in Arizona and it was 1990 or 1991. Griffey got on the bus and everybody ran to him. It was so many people. It was like he was Jordan. I never got his autograph but I did get to see him from pretty close as a 9 or 10 year old boy. I thought Griffey was so cool then. I think Griffey is so cool now. Look at this King Saladeen Griffey Jr. rookie card. Oh man… This artwork says so much.
Hope I got you at least a little bit interested in the Topps Project 2020 movement. Hit that Google Search and type in Topps Project 2020 and flip it over to an image search. Guarantee you like what you see. Check this video from Blake Jamieson talking about his childhood growing up as an Oakland A’s fan and going to many games with pops. Love this.
And here is TheFantasyFix.com Topps Project 2020 Podcast going in much deeper on the sports card renaissance we’re currently experiencing. Shout out to Alan Harrison and Lunchmade over at The Fantasy Fix for having me on their podcast this week. It was my first time on a podcast and I had a lot of fun! Hopefully you guys find some joy in hearing us ramble about our love of baseball cards!
