When I first got back into sports cards during the pandemic, I had no idea where to start. The game had changed since I last left it in the Mid90s. Long gone were the days of just buying some packs for a couple of bucks and having some fun. While you could still buy some product from old school brands like Topps there were now all of these flashy cards and limited edition ones that people were chasing. Opening wax was super expensive and I couldn’t see how kids could be in the hobby unless their parents were loaded and willing to drop major coin to keep their appetites full. I grew up in the hobby and my pops used to buy me a box of cards for every one of my birthdays as a kid. He would buy them from Price Club which is now Costco. It was an inexpensive hobby and it got me into photography, stats, and organization like no other. My parents pushed me and my brother to go hard with what we loved.
The rush of opening a pack and seeing what you get has not left me. But getting back into the hobby I quickly found out that buying wax and trying to pull good cards was an expensive proposition. And just like all of my money blowing adventures I of course had to figure this out myself. I bought so many packs of Prizm Basketball during the Zion and Ja year and all I got from it was a Zion Red Cracked Ice parallel that was the most off-centered card of all-time. It was actually pretty hilarious to see… That was a sign that I needed to slow the f*ck down! While chasing the hot rookie card will always be where it’s at, I also get a ton of enjoyment out of different oddball type of cards and packs. How could you not chuckle just a bit and a card like this below with the Menendez Bros in the background sitting courtside??? GOLD.
In the sports card world you have people who have been collectors for years, you have the Sneakerheads that came over during the pandemic, you have “investors” looking to diversify their portfolios and then you have new peeps stoked to be a part of a new hobby. Bonus points if your kids are new to the hobby as well. It took me a couple of years to figure out and while I’ve taken L’s with the hobby, I’m now fine just having fun ripping packs here and there and then picking up cards that make me feel a certain way. And that’s what Eric has done with Classic Wax Sports Cards. He’s given degenerate gamblers like myself refuse by giving me a quick fix and a good laugh at the fraction of the price of ripping brand new packs.
Classic Wax Sports Cards curates all of their picks from Eric’s collection. And let me tell you, Eric knows his sh*t! His knowledge of retro sports gear, magazines, video games, music, and sports cards is next level. He has an amazing eye for great designs from cards of yesteryear and he has a knack for finding cards that you’ve never seen before, have forgotten about, or maybe you just completely slept on. He designs and manufactures the boxes and the wax wrappers so everything you buy from him is curated and handmade which is dope.
Kids want to rip packs and their parents want to support their passion. But if you find yourself chasing Ja and Zion Prizm rookie cards you’ll be in debt soon. And if your significant other tracks your moves (or bank account) you’ll be caught slipping for sure when those shiny raw cards start piling up all over the place. So kill 9 birds with 1 stone and support a vet-operated, local business out of Carlsbad, CA. Eric is out here hustling and he has a great product for you. Your kids will love Classic Wax Sports Cards and you will too whether you like Baseball Cards, Hockey Cards, Basketball Cards, or Football Cards.
