The 2020 baseball season is finally here!!!! It’s been a long, strange road to get to opening day but somehow we made it. We have no idea how long the season will go for but hopefully we’re able to get everything in. Baseball season means a lot to me as it usually means going to games with friends and family while cheering on our hometown San Diego Padres. Sadly there won’t be any fan attendance at Petco Park or any baseball stadium this year but I think we’re all collectively happy just to have some games on TV to watch. And whether the Padres end up chasing a Wild Card spot or finish in last place they will still fill a place in my heart. To celebrate the MLB season kicking off, I wanted to talk some baseball cards with you guys again!
This time around we will be going all the way back to 1987 to open a pack of Donruss Baseball Cards. Looking back at the year of 1987 in baseball cards is great. You had the chance to pull rookie cards of a lot of greats! ‘87 rookie cards that year included Mark McGwire (yes ‘85 was his true RC but this still counts), Bo Jackson, Greg Maddux, Barry Bonds, Rafael Palmeiro, Barry Larkin, and Will Clark. How’s that for a rookie lineup! Pretty spectacular if you ask me.
1987 Donruss Baseball Cards were super hard to keep in mint condition because of those black edges. These are some of my favorite baseball card borders of all-time though! Looking back at the years that Topps, Fleer, and Donruss all had cards in a given year, I think 1987 was the best showing for all together in one year. Back then, the ‘87 Donruss rookie cards held the best value in comparison to Topps and Fleer. 1987 Topps had the amazing woodgrain borders but they never did seem to have much value. Were they overproduced that year? I’m guessing so. I can’t remember if I ever got my hands on Barry Bonds rookie from Donruss that year but I think I did? Take a look at that card too. Bonds was epic.
People love to hate on Bonds and the alleged steroid use and I get it. He cheated and was never likable so he was never helping his case of getting in the HOF. But do we really need our favorite baseball players to all be role models? No, we don’t. Bonds is the best player I’ve ever seen live. You couldn’t pitch to him. He had an amazing eye which led to tons of walks making him an OBP darling. And if you threw Bonds a pitch in the heart of the plate? Yeah…. He’s going to hit it a country mile. A lot of fans think of Bonds on the Giants where he absolutely mashed but his years on the Pirates were LEGIT. Here are two of Bonds’ bombs from 1990 to remind you of the beast he was for Pittsburgh. Shout out to the Padres and Jack Murphy Stadium always giving opposing hitters a home to absolutely MASH.
I really hope that one day Bonds gets in the HOF. I also want Pete Rose in too. Did they cheat? Yes! Have others cheated throughout sports? Absolutely. Time will tell on their inclusion although I’m not sure if Rose’s time is up.
Below is another pack opening from my big bro Lunchmade. This time? You guessed it. 1987 Donruss Baseball Cards. Will he pull a sick rookie card or a pack full of commons? I really hope he pulls a Bonds or Bo because he will go NUTS.
