A lot of people debate on who the best emcee is and what their top 5 lists look like but in my opinion it comes down to Biggie, Jigga, Andre 3000, Q-Tip, and Kendrick Lamar. If you ask me this same question tomorrow it’ll probably change but on April 8th, 2020 this is my top 5 list. But when it’s all said and done, I truly believe that Kendrick will go down as the best ever. He hasn’t dropped a bad mixtape or album since 2009 when he dropped the Kendrick Lamar EP. In that stretch, he has dropped the EP just mentioned, Overly Dedicated, Section.80, Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City, To Pimp a Butterfly, Untitled Unmastered, and Damn. Kendrick fan or not, you can’t deny that he has dropped some classics. Kendrick never stays in one lane and pushes boundaries with each release. He has cadence, he has breath control, he has lyrics, he is a good role model… Kendrick is flawless in my eyes up until this point. How many rappers dropped album after album without a flop? I’ll wait for your answer…
I have many K-Dot songs that I love but it’s “The Heart Pt. 2” that is probably my favorite. “The Heart Pt. 2” dropped in 2010 and I believe I first heard about it from either from the sites I frequented back then, 2DOPEBOYZ.com and smokingsection.net. It was these 2 sites that kept me up on all of the new music dropping. “The Heart Pt. 2” was the intro to the Overly Dedicated album but at some point it was removed which is why you don’t see it on any of the streaming services. The song starts with a chilling intro by artist Dash Snow (RIP) talking about what keeps him alive. He talks about listening to music all day which is something I instantly gravitated to because that explained what keeps me alive. After the intro, the beat starts which samples The Roots song “A Peace of Light” which lays down a soft beat for you to hear Kendrick over. From there Kendrick snaps on the beat…. Just give it a listen if you aren’t familiar with it. And this was only the intro to the Overly Dedicated album?! Kendrick got all of his fans so hyped for that album and the future of his career. Kenny hasn’t looked back since 2009 and he keeps ascending. While his fans today know every word to “Humble", it’s the real fans that still nod their head to “The Heart Pt. 2”.
