This week would have been Guru’s 62nd birthday and to give him his flowers, we have the new single from Murs x Wiardon, “Flowers for Guru”. Legendary underground rap emcee Murs has paid homage to others rap groups and labels in the past with his “Flowers for People Under the Stairs” and “Flowers for THE ROC” tracks. Now we get Murs’ riding this laid back beat from Wiardon and the formula just works here. But back to the beat tho….
Throw some good headphones on and turn this beat up… It’s so f*ckin dope…
And oh yeah, to those who don’t have Spotify accounts, I got you on the YouTube action as well. It’s important you start with the instrumental because it’s just too damn buttery. It’s the definition of a jazzy hip hop beat or as the cool kids call it, a jazz rap instrumental.
This track was meant to be released on the Speak n Spell EP released earlier this year from Murs and Wiardon but we couldn’t complete it in time. So it has stayed in the stash getting tweaked, changed, refined, mixed, and mastered for a couple of months. Shout out to Nothing Else on the mixing and mastering because he’s a perfectionist with an amazing ear. The song was just too dope to keep on ice so it’s now the first single off of the Speak n Spell Deluxe EP that will be dropping on Friday, 8/11. 3 brand new tracks including this 1 and 2 hot remixes that put a whole new spin on the OG versions of a couple of the tracks from the project. This “Flowers for Guru” track just stood out though. It’s reminds me of Coltrane back in an old jazz club back in the 60’s. Shout out to 360 Promo putting together the ill visuals on this with the lyric video. It compliments the smoky track so well.
On top of the smooth beat from Wiardon we got Murs who cuts up the instrumental like a hot knife through a butter stick. This is one of those tracks where the beat and the lyrics melt into each other which doesn’t happen often but when it does?? It’s a beautiful thing. Add in the Guru interview clips and this track is a rap! It’s good music.
So if you call yourself a fan of this hip hop thing, give the beat a spin… give the track a spin. Watch the lyric video… And if you’re feeling it, knock it over and over again. Share it with a homie. Put it on a playlist… Just bump it!
