The new Evidence track “Unlearning” might have slipped right past you and that’s alright. I completely understand. It’s hard to keep up on new music when there seems to be 7 new songs dropping each day. I try to stay up on all of the new hip hop and rap releases from Action Bronson all the way to Young Nudy but I also miss things. I’m old school boom bap at heart but I don’t discriminate on some of the newer guys. I love the art and culture of it all. I also dig creativity so I love seeing the waves that come in and out of the genre. What I am sure of with all of my listening is that not many songs and albums have much of a shelf life. What’s hot now is forgotten a month from now. That’s why I’m always on the hunt for timeless classics to keep in rotation. And they’re still out there. You just have to work for it. You have to be up on the streaming algorithms weekly to not miss a new release and you have to follow your artists across their socials. It is serious work! The Spotify Release Radar seems to do a great job of delivering me my weekly new music each Friday. It’s all curated based on my listening history which is pretty cool. Here’s my current Release Radar which at this very moment has a pic of MURS. They know me so well!
Each Friday morning, I hit that Release Radar playlist to see what dropped. It reminds me of the old school days when I used to hit Tower Records at midnight on Monday nights to be the first to buy the new releases. I am that guy who wants to know the good sh*t right when it drops. I want to be the homie sending out links to the hottest new songs. It’s usually around 4am when I start my streaming so you can find me on the couch with my AirPods going through new music and nodding my head. From there, I start adding songs to my many playlists so I can listen to them forever. It’s all a process but I think I’ve perfected it by now. Outside of my playlists, sometimes I get into a new single, EP, or a full length album that I’ll listen to on repeat. And then even months later I’ll still find myself coming back to it. It sadly doesn’t happen as much as it used to but it still happens. The last album that I bumped in full when it dropped and still listen to a lot today is the Fetti album from Curren$y, Freddie Gibbs, and The Alchemist. I’m a big ALC guy when it comes to beats and then I get that smooth Spitta flow when some Gangsta Gibbs just ripping it? GOLD. Maybe not to many but to me this is straight timeless fire.
But finding albums that stand the test of time is rare anymore. We’ve now resorted to being happy with an album when it has a only few songs that can be listened to. What happened to the days of thoughtful album construction? The climate now rewards quantity over quality which is a shame. I stay in the weeds though. I’m that snake in the grass looking for some bangers. And when I see an artist that I like is about to drop a new single or just dropped something I’m all over it. Recently I caught wind that Evidence was getting ready to drop a new single. Evidence and ALC gave us a Step Brothers single last year which I thought was hinting at a new album but I didn’t see anything materialize. So now here is Evidence coming out with his first single since he dropped his brilliant Weather or Not album in early 2018 on Rhymesayers Entertainment. Here’s “Throw It All Away” from the album. Alchemist on the beat….
So when I hear that Evidence has a new track dropping I am waiting by my phone with AirPods connected and ready to go. Evidence has gone through some things over the past couple of years that I feel so bad about. I don’t know Ev but when I heard what happened it really hit me man. I won’t go into it here but I know Ev has a lot bottled up inside of him. So I approached his new song with excitement but also with intrigue. What would he be rapping about? What would the vibe be like? Would ALC be on the beat? I found out about the new song in 2 ways… I saw Ev’s post on IG and then my homie Jared from Minnesota sent me a DM about it. I saw that the song had dropped on the streaming platforms and I stopped what I was doing to give Evidence’s new song “Unlearning” my undivided attention. And man…. I pressed play and Ev was spitting immediately. The beat is on some lofi sh*t and Evidence sounded so focused. I LOVED the track from first listen. As I write this article I am listening to the track over and over again. Mr. Slow Flow is back. If he has an album coming he is about to drop some heat. I was glad to hear Ev come out of personal tragedy with triumph like this. His beats on the most recent Brother Ali album were amazing and this track just picks up where he left off there. Here is “Unlearning” from Evidence. Evidence inspires me to write. He also inspires me to create. I love hip and love when artists like Evidence drop new music to move me. Shout out to Evidence. Cali represent!
