Enough with the beef rap. Doom told you it would lead to getting your teeth clapped but now I wake up this morning and there’s 2 more songs from Drake and Kendrick? We all get it by now. Kendrick is a lyrical goat and a music savant and Drake is a fantastic pop star who has had some mega bangers. I’ve been a Kendrick fan going back to the EP. When I heard K-Dot rapping over a Black Milk beat I was an instant fan. I was lucky enough to hit the Overly Dedicated tour in LA when I was one in 500 people watching Kendrick and Ab-Soul going back and forth on such a small stage.
I was a fan of Drake when So Far Gone dropped because let’s be real… who wasn’t fuckin with that? That mixtape slapped back then and still slaps. But before that, Drake’s Comeback Season was really dope. Drake is a dope emcee. Seeing him work with 9th Wonder, Elzhi, and Phonte really caught me off-guard back in the day.
Of course I’m siding with Kendrick here but let’s not forget that Drake took a chance and slid Kendrick in on Take Care with “Buried Alive”. Listen to those lyrics and realize that these guys have known each other a long time. “Poetic Justice” is an amazing track yet I feel it just gets lost in these guys’ catalogs.
“Euphoria” was amazing and the back-to-back with “6:16 in LA” is masterful. But shit… Now I have more diss songs to listen to? This is exhausting… When “Control” dropped, Kendrick woke up the rap game.
I just feel that most in the rap game are laughing at this point. Drake just needs to take an L, regroup, and drop a rap album that takes away the ego and puts him with Premier. Not even sure Premier would do it but it would be so good for hip hop. Drake he needs to rebuild his rap persona if he wants to play in this sandbox. And he’s fully capable. But he ain’t gonna do it. Pride will get in the way.
I’m just ready for emcees to posse up and show off who got the best rap skills. I want emcees like Big K.R.I.T. to bring Luda and Bun back for another “Country Shit”…. While he’s at it, add in some BigXthePlug in the mix or some Key Glock. Rap and hip hop does have boundaries… think outside the box though. Rappers need to start burying the ego and creating art that will last for a lifetime and beyond. Battle raps are cool but talking about each other’s families? That’s not cool. If we’re gonna talk family business, I’d rather listen to Royce describe his upbringing so I get to know his story even better. Each Royce album I learn about him as a human being, an alcoholic, his childhood, and I watch him get better with every album. We need more Royce’s…
Take that beef and let the beats be your therapy. Redirect the hate and put it into something positive. Do something for kids in need. Call up that homie you’ve had beef with and bury it. Life is short and we don’t need any other amazing writers to leave this earth. Give me some more Elzhi please. Who cares if it only gets hundreds of thousands of streams… It changes lives of those that are immersed in the Detroit emcee.
Where is the love for beautiful artists like Oddisee? Emcees and producers who stay in their lane and NEVER bend for the industry is so admirable. I feel like this Kendrick and Drake beef is going to benefit the real hip hoppers so I’m just saying you better be writing and creating right now because the boom bap renaissance is coming.
I want to feel something again in hip hop like when Phonte’s mom stepped up that day in North Carolina.
I want to see emcees come together and create instead of harbor beef from years ago. If people can get past differences, lives can be changed with good friendships, therapy, and overall growth as human beings. Songs like this below will never see the light of the day but they still keep bringing light to my day some 30+ years later.
I wish my feeds would stop with the Drake and Kendrick and instead giving me more shit like this that I missed over the years.
Hard times make emcees and producers dig deep. The passion in this verse from Camu Tao does everything for me.
Then, when emcees have that material getting close to push, you gotta build with likeminded individuals. I love NWA, I love the Pharcyde, but I also love emcees like Ellay Khule who 99.99% of you will never here. Ellay Khule couldn’t do it alone… The Good Life Cafe gave emcees the opportunity to network and meet other creatives in the area. Because of Good Life and Project Blowed, lots of rappers were linking with each other and building.
Kanye has always been masterful and bringing people together but what A$AP Rocky did with “1 Train” was truly amazing. Listen to the lineup… A$AP Rocky, Joey Bada$$, Kendrick, Action Bronson, Danny Brown, Big K.R.I.T, and YelaWolf all on the same song???? These dudes never did a video because they didn’t have the budget to do it. But A$AP Rocky (or somebody on his team) made THIS happen. Who had the best verse?? YelaWolf right??
We need more “1train” type songs and less beef. You want to take this whole Kendrick and Drake beef and really trip people out? Let’s all just tell Kendrick and Top that they need to release the Kendrick and Cole EP. Get an old throwaway verse from Drake and put it out. Beef done. Hip hop wins.
