It is now early on Sunday morning and I seriously need to mellow out and set the tone for a chill day. When I need to slow down the pace I like throwing on some old 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s soul music while I do my chores around the apartment. My wife loves some good soulful R&B as well so we can throw music on the Sonos speakers around the house and vibe out. My wife loves Al Green and Brenton Wood while I’m more of a Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye kind of a guy. The vibes are similar though… Happy soulful music to cheer you up. Speaking of Curtis Mayfield, “The Makings of You” is a beautiful song to highlight. Here is Curtis performing the song live.
Losing Bill Withers a few weeks ago hurt. Bill was a legend with a lot of memorable tracks. His music and many of the others that make up this old school 70’s R&B and Soul genre told stories of love and struggle and it’s undeniable that they all came from the heart. You can literally hear their soul through these songs and maybe that’s why they’re so touching. If I could go back and live in any decade before I was born in 1980, I would go back to the 70’s. Free spirited styles and the music was full of emotion. Just listen to “Mysterious Vibes” from The Blackbyrds. The song dropped in 1977 but the instrumentation and production value sound so clean. This is soulful funky music that brings in some jazz, some R&B, and some soul all in one amazing track.
As I normally do, when I catch a vibe through music I need to document it in a playlist. Below you’ll find my Spotify playlist that contains many of the classic 70’s soul music songs that I love. This is a playlist that will never be finished as I always find new music that catch my ear so I must add it in the mix. Whether you give this playlist a spin on a Sunday like today or you’re just looking to put a smile on your face, this is a great place to start. Enjoy!
