So what is Mid90s? I still don’t know but I’m honing in on something that I think will be big. The clothing launch is now live on the site and so I need to start flipping it. But now that I have this gear, I don’t even care about the cash. I mean, I do but at the same time, I just want to hook up the crew. That’s what it was always about to me. Building a brand that embodies the friendships my childhood friends and I have kept strong for over 30 years. So when I come out a shirt, you ain’t gotta like it cause the hood gone love it.
Mid90s was actually created as a shell company for me. I needed to build my other side hustle brand on the low (Shout out to 2nd Childhood) but I wanted to have another brand I could build in my spare time. I’ve always loved hip hop and the skate and surf culture so my dream was to combine this foundation with old school sports. But the brand name itself Mid90s? Well…. That actually came from the great Jonah Hill movie with the same name, Mid90s.
The movie reminded me of Kids as well as my high school years where our crew would all hang out at the Mexi spot El Cotijan on the late night tip. It would be nothing but kids from UC, Clairemont, and Paradise Hills. Maybe LJ is you were more of the surfer vibe than the spoiled rich kid steez. It was such a dope scene. Literally every weekend you could hit up Cotijan and link up with crew. Skaters like Brandon Turner and Peter Smolik from SK8MAFIA would have the boombox bumping some shit I had never heard of. That’s where I first heard Company Flow. I still remember the moment vividly where “8 Steps to Perfection” was bumping from the skater’s ghetto blasters and we were all crowding the streets shooting the shit while crushing carne burritos.
So with Jonah Hill’s movie, I immediately went back to my junior high and high school years. Around the time that Mid90s came out, I was on the hunt to lock down a URL for my TBD brand. While looking up hundreds (thousands?) of URL’s on GoDaddy, I typed in Mid90s and noticed it was already owned but was up for sale. I thought…. Wait… Jonah Hill and his crew didn’t swipe this up? Pretty dope name and the movie was fire and they’re just gonna sleep on the URL? The price tag was $700… yeah, a lot of cash for somebody who is not fiscally responsible. So I thought about it a lot and then just got super high and snagged the damn thing for 7 hundo. Why not right? YOLO.
And since that moment I’ve just been pushing out articles (i don’t like the name blog) trying to be on my Bobby Hundreds’ shit. Shout out to Bobby, the book is one of the most inspiring books a young entrepreneur could read. No more of those corny sales books from Dale Carnegie. Today you gotta hustle, network, and be a man about your word. Word is bond.
But behind all of these articles was the sheer drive to say fuck it and just do me. In order to do that, I just had to do it. Aldryn would always tell just to get after it. So I did…. And I don’t know what I’m doing… Learning on the fly… And that’s what I’m going to continue to do. Stay hustlin’.
This clothing launch is just the start. I’m going to throw pop-up shows and lock down some retail space. I’m going to build a community of likeminded peeps who want to build together. I’ve been networking my entire life waiting for this moment. It’s here…. I have a ton left in the tank and I’m on that Teslamborghini mode right now. Got that Scatter Brain that’s about to rocket straight to Mars. If you want to build, holler atcha boy…. I’m out here.
